There's a mighty fine craze going round Sydney at the moment. One that will definitely help you shed that ripped summer body you've been flaunting lately.
We're talking about the growing popularity of the $1 menu. That's right. A dollar. 2/3 of a Euro. 48 Indian rupees. 20 Cuban pesos. 16,400 Vietnamese Dong (yes that's a real currency).
In some cases, the lonely dollar will get you something small and delicious. In others, it will get you something bigger, and still delicious. Either way, you're doing alright when all it takes is something you probably don't want to carry round anyway. Here are some of the best.
Oysters - The Morrisson - George st, Sydney
To many travelers new to Australia, the ungodly prices of oysters is pretty ridiculous, and just plain mean. So thank God for The Morrisson, who's been holding a famous Oyster night on Wednesdays for quite some time. It's simple - $1 oysters from 6-7pm every Wednesday. Come with $30, you'll get a platter of 30 oysters. Beautiful.
Dumplings - Johnny Wongs - Taylor Square
The first great thing about Johnny Wongs is that it has amazing dumplings, and they're just $1 each on Wednesdays. The second great things is that it's halfway up the staircase to 2 great bars in Lo-fi and The Standard.
Tacos - El Topo Basement - Bondi Juntion
At the top of the Eastern in Bondi Junction is El Topo, one of the best Mexican restairants in Sydney. Unfortunately their food is a little bit more than a dollar. But so kind are they to the penny-pinching folk that just 1 level below is the Basement. And in the basement, they have Peso Wednesdays. Tacos, margaritas, deliciosos!
Burgers - The Unicorn - Oxford st, Paddington
The Unicorn has pretty great deals on every night, but it's just a whole new level of awesome on Tight Ass Tuesday with $1 burgers. And these aint no sliders, there are cheeseburgers, fried chicken burgers, cuban sandwiches, even Mac & Chesses burgers! We now believe in Unicorns.
Hot Dogs - Soda Factory - Wentworth st
The Soda Factory does hot dogs for $1. But what makes it even better is that the Soda Factory is just an awesome place any night of the week. Live music, dim lights and rockin atmosphere hidden behind a 50s-looking doorway saying "Bobby's Bossdogs". These aren't shitty little mini hot dogs you'd find at your niece's 3rd birthday. They're serious, and they're amazing. By the way, it's on Tuesdays.
Steak/Schnitzel/Curry - Cock n Bull - Bondi
I'm not kidding you. Steaks and schnitzels for a dollar. They used to be $0 with $1.50 sides, now they've gone up to $1 with $2 sides. Coz inflation and all that shit, ya know. Whatever, still makes the list and still worth a visit. The trip there will cost more than the meal.
