Four-wheel-driving on Fraser Island is the best guided tour down under, according to Australian Traveller's Readers' Choice Awards 2013. This motoring adventure came in ahead of both Port Arthur Ghost Tours, and two-years-running winner BridgeClimb Sydney.
Seventy-five Mile Beach, which runs almost the whole East coast of the Island, acts as a sandy highway used by both 4WDs and small aircraft alike.
This unconventional thoroughfare allows visitors to explore the beautiful scenery of the island, with its colourful sand cliffs and over 100 freshwater lakes, many of which are surrounded by lush rainforest.
On the beach itself is the SS Maheno, a shipwrecked ocean liner which was used as a New Zealand hospital ship during the First World War.
While you can choose to rent your own vehicle, the guided tours offer both driving expertise and local knowledge, with special mentions made of three tour operators; Cool Dingo Tours, Trailblazer Tours and Fraser Explorer Tours.
Fraser Island is accessed via ferry from Hervey Bay, approximately 3.5 hours drive north of Brisbane. Frequent-enough flights to Hervey Bay are also available from Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne.
